On this day in 1940, the Luftwaffe started its biggest daylight attack against England with 1,020 sorties over London alone. Fighter Command & its Allies shot down 56 of the Luftwaffe aircraft in the 705 sorties flown that day. The battle continued for many weeks but this day made it clear to the German High Command that Fighter Command had not been weakened as much as they had thought. | Royal Air Force
